What the role is really asking for

This is not a reporting role dressed up as strategy. The advert places the post between evidence, policy and senior decision-making. Strong candidates need to show that they can judge the quality and limits of evidence, turn it into usable options, and explain uncertainty without becoming vague.

The professional routes are deliberately broad. Relevant evidence may come from policy, operations, strategy, economics, analysis or another setting where you helped leaders decide what mattered most. The common thread is the quality of the judgement, not the job title you held.

How to shape the application

Treat the CV and personal statement as two connected pieces of evidence. Use the CV to establish scope, progression, analytical responsibilities and outcomes. Use the statement to prove the essential criteria with fewer, deeper examples rather than a list of claims.

A useful structure for each example is:

  1. Define the decision and why it mattered.
  2. Explain the evidence available, including weaknesses or gaps.
  3. Show your own analysis and the options you developed.
  4. Describe how you communicated the recommendation.
  5. Quantify the decision, change or learning that followed.

The official page says the verbal and numerical tests follow the first application stage. That makes timing important: submit early enough to complete both tests and the remaining application before the same final deadline.

Behaviour and interview preparation

For Making Effective Decisions, prepare an example where you actively tested evidence, distinguished fact from judgement and made a defensible recommendation. For Seeing the Big Picture, show how the work connected to wider organisational outcomes, external trends or longer-term risk.

The interview includes an experience-based presentation. Build a small bank of examples that can support both the presentation and follow-up questions: a strategic recommendation, a difficult stakeholder choice, an evidence limitation you handled openly, and a delivery example under pressure.

Checks before you apply

Confirm your chosen location carefully because the department says it will make only one location-based offer. Recheck the exact test deadline, presentation instructions, eligibility and office expectations on the official page before submitting.
