Read the official HMRC advert before using this preparation guide. Do the eligibility check first; strong writing cannot replace a mandatory qualification.

Check eligibility before drafting

Compare your degree or master’s qualification with the requirements stated in the full application. Check the driving licence rule and when it must be met. Record your preferred location only after checking the available offices.

The public advert’s provisional assessment-centre date contains a calendar error. Use the campaign’s confirmed invitation rather than making travel arrangements from that line.

Plan a concise personal statement

Create a list of the skills, knowledge and experience the role requires. Match evidence from study, projects or employment to that list. Explain your own contribution, the reasoning behind it and the result.

Reserve space for why you want professional surveying development. A statement that could be used unchanged for any graduate job is unlikely to explain that motivation well.

Use our 750-word statement worksheet to allocate space and check coverage. The word limit is a ceiling, not a requirement to fill every word.

Prepare to contribute at the assessment centre

For a group task, practise making a clear point, drawing on evidence and helping the group decide. Talking longest is not the same as moving the work forward.

For the technical presentation, build a short explanation that a non-specialist can follow. Distinguish facts, assumptions and your recommendation. Check the invitation for the actual brief, timings and permitted materials.
