This guide summarises the application facts checked on the official HMRC advert. Apply there and confirm the exact deadline before writing. The preparation advice below is independent.
Build a criteria map before writing
Copy the essential criteria into a private checklist. Beside each, choose evidence of your own work: the question, method, decision and result. Identify gaps before spending time polishing the opening paragraph.
Keep the CV and statement useful in different ways. The CV establishes scope and experience. The statement should make the strongest evidence against the criteria easy to locate. The advert allows an initial CV sift if application volume is high, so neither document should be treated as an afterthought.
Make the analytical reasoning visible
For each example, explain why the method suited the question. What comparison did you use? What could bias the result? How did you distinguish an interesting finding from evidence strong enough to act on?
Give a result in proportion to the evidence. A cautious recommendation with a clear limitation can be stronger than an unsupported claim that your intervention caused every improvement.
Rehearse a short methods presentation
Practise with a simple structure: problem, approach, key result, limitation and recommendation. Explain one technical choice in plain English. Prepare for a challenge to the assumptions rather than rehearsing only the slides.
Use your examples to prepare for the behaviours listed above, then check the invitation for the final format. For help structuring evidence, read how the sift scores an application.
