Civil Service personal statement examples

This teaching example uses the HMRC IT Service Manager (Asset Management) advert, checked on 4 October 2026. It is an example of evidence selection, not a claim that this vacancy remains open. Check the official advert for current status. It requests a 500-word personal statement addressing the essential criteria; that word limit does not apply to every Civil Service role.

  1. List each essential criterion before drafting. This advert asks about platform operations, service management and improvement, supplier communication, and software licensing/assets.
  2. Choose genuine experiences that demonstrate those requirements. Separate desirable criteria from essential criteria and follow the application's separate limits.
  3. Allocate space according to relevance. Keep enough detail to show your responsibility, choices and result, then check that every essential criterion is covered.

Invented teaching extract, not an applicant's evidence

When our service desk found inconsistent device records, I compared the asset register with supplier reports and agreed a reconciliation process with the supplier lead. I prioritised records affecting renewal decisions and documented the unresolved gaps for our service manager. The team corrected the identified mismatches before the renewal review. I then introduced a monthly exception check so colleagues could detect the same issue earlier.

Records and supplier reports give context; agreeing a process shows supplier communication; prioritisation and follow-up checks show service improvement. The result is specific without inventing a numerical saving.
