What the role is really asking for

The key word is transition. The role must connect programme delivery, technical cutover, business readiness, operational acceptance and early-life support across HMRC and partner departments. A generic project-management example will be weak unless it shows how a service became genuinely ready to operate.

The advert also places SAP S/4HANA and shared services in the context. You need to distinguish direct essential experience from desirable exposure and be candid about where your evidence transfers.

How to shape the application

Because the statement is only 500 words, the CV has to carry real evidence rather than act as a list of titles. Use it to establish the scale of transformations, production services, stakeholders, suppliers and operational risk you have led.

Build the statement around one substantial transition or two tightly linked examples. Make the control points visible:

  • readiness criteria and who accepted them;
  • cutover, dependencies and contingency planning;
  • governance and escalation of risk;
  • knowledge transfer, support and operational ownership;
  • stability and measurable outcomes after go-live.

Avoid claiming a smooth launch without explaining the decisions and assurance that made it smooth.

Behaviour, Strength and interview preparation

For Leadership, show direction and accountability across teams you did not fully control. For Seeing the Big Picture, connect transition choices to the wider shared-services outcome and continuity of critical functions. For Communicating and Influencing, use a senior disagreement where your evidence changed a decision or secured readiness action.

The interview also includes Strengths. Do not script model answers. Reflect instead on the parts of transition leadership that energise you, the situations in which you work at your best and honest examples that demonstrate those preferences.

Checks before you apply

The official page says Newcastle availability and office arrangements require attention, and that sponsorship is not offered. Confirm those details, the grade, final interview instructions and any changes to the sift route before submission.
