What the role is really asking for
This is portfolio leadership, not ownership of a single backlog. The advert expects a vision and roadmap across multiple teams, strategic engagement with senior leaders, governance, funding and performance measures, plus coaching of product managers.
The Business Tax context and process-mining focus matter, but the transferable test is whether you can turn a transformation goal into a coherent portfolio, make hard sequencing choices and own outcomes across organisational boundaries.
How to shape the application
The 750-word statement has to cover a long essential-criteria list, so avoid one paragraph per criterion. Use two or three examples that each prove several capabilities and signpost the criteria clearly.
Show the difference between activity and leadership. A roadmap is not evidence by itself; explain the competing needs, how you used research or service measures, what you funded or stopped, how you managed dependencies and what improved.
The strongest metrics will operate at portfolio level: service outcomes, adoption, cost, risk, cycle time, capability or delivery confidence across teams. Where results were still emerging, separate leading indicators from confirmed outcomes.
Interview preparation
The official page says the interview uses experience-based questions. Prepare to go deeper than the statement on product strategy, prioritisation, stakeholder conflict, research, value measurement, multidisciplinary delivery and capability building.
Have one example where you changed course when evidence challenged the strategy. It demonstrates both product judgement and the maturity to stop or pivot rather than defend sunk work.
Also prepare a clear description of how you coached other product managers and raised standards at scale. The advert treats profession-building as part of delivery, not an optional extra.
Checks before you apply
Confirm the grade, location restrictions, office moves, sponsorship position and final interview instructions on the official page. Use the desirable statement only for genuine evidence that adds to the main application.
