What the role is really asking for
The centre of gravity is operational service quality. HMRC describes responsibility across multiple platforms and channels, with internal teams, partners, suppliers and external trade customers all depending on the service. Evidence should therefore combine technical awareness with disciplined service management and customer judgement.
The advert names service levels, operational agreements, reporting, change governance, asset and configuration control, transition into live service and continual improvement. A good application will show how those practices affected reliability or users rather than merely naming ITIL processes.
How to shape the application
Use the short CV entries to establish context: the services you supported, user or transaction scale, suppliers, team scope and performance responsibilities. Then use the 750-word statement to demonstrate the essential criteria through two or three linked examples.
A strong service example should make the operational chain visible:
- The customer or business impact.
- The evidence from incidents, performance data or feedback.
- Your diagnosis and prioritisation.
- The agreement you reached across teams or suppliers.
- The change in availability, response, satisfaction, risk or cost.
If you claim stakeholder management, name the difficult trade-off. If you claim improvement, quantify the baseline and result.
Interview preparation
Prepare examples for service recovery, supplier challenge, SLA performance, controlled change, transition to live service and problem management. Panels can distinguish an owner from a coordinator, so be clear about which decisions you made and what you escalated.
Also prepare to explain technical concepts to a non-technical user. The advert explicitly values communication across both groups, and a service manager has to protect the service without hiding behind technical language.
