What the role is really asking for

No previous tax experience is required, but the role is not generic reception work. HMRC describes a mainly phone-based service dealing with varied and sometimes complex enquiries, including conversations about debt. The evidence needs to show composure, clarity, accurate recording and a genuine focus on helping the customer take the right next step.

The role also requires basic maths and comfort moving between spoken conversations and written notes. Think about examples from retail, hospitality, care, contact centres, administration, volunteering or any setting where people relied on you for accurate support.

Prepare for the Customer Service Test

The official page says the Civil Service Customer Service Test follows the first application stage and must be completed by the stated deadline. Do not leave it until the final morning; the advert specifically warns about maintenance periods and limited technical support near closing.

Practice the judgement behind good service:

  • understand the actual need before acting;
  • follow policy and protect confidential information;
  • take ownership without promising what you cannot deliver;
  • explain the next step clearly;
  • escalate risk or vulnerability appropriately.

Read every instruction in the live test. Practice can help you recognise the format, but it must not replace the official guidance.

Video interview preparation

The interview is recorded rather than a live panel conversation. Prepare concise examples for the three named Behaviours, then practise delivering them naturally to camera without reading a script.

For Managing a Quality Service, show both the customer’s need and the service standard. For Delivering at Pace, show prioritisation and accuracy, not speed alone. For Communicating and Influencing, demonstrate how you adjusted your explanation and checked understanding.

Use a simple spoken structure: situation, responsibility, your actions, result and what you learned. Keep the focus on what you did.

Checks before you apply

This advert closes at 14:00 rather than the more common late-evening deadline. Confirm the exact test deadline, maintenance notice, eligibility, sponsorship position and seven-day interview window on the official page.
